Classification of network: LAN vs WAN, data networks vs. circuit networks. Network topologies, services and functions. Layering of networks functions: the OSI model. Multiplexing and switching. Packet switching vs. Circuit switching. Local Area Networks, the Ethernet technology. The TCP/IP model and architecture. Main protocols of TCP/IP suite: ARP, PPP, IP, ICMP, IGMP, UDP, TCP, DNS, HTTP. IP routing. IP addressing and private networks. IPv4 and IPv6. IP mobility (brief overview).
Performance evaluation of networks. Basic queueing models for packet networks and circuit networks.
