The course aims at:
- providing 1st year international students with the language skills, critical thinking and learning strategies required to attend a University degree held in a foreign language, in this case held in English;
- preparing students to work effectively and confidently in an academic environment.
"The course is targeted at a B2 level of the CEFR.

The course will focus on the following core areas:
GRAMMAR:
1. revision/consolidation of verb system; 2. Word order; 3. Question and negative formation; 4. Uses and differences of formal and informal language.
READING:
1. Identifying main and supporting ideas; 2. Identifying a sequence of events; 3. Categorizing; 4. Understanding purpose; 5. Inferring meaning; 6. Identifying pros and cons; 7. Summarizing; 8. Understanding referencing and cohesion; 9. Understanding details; 10. Understanding key terms; 11. Identifying arguments and counterarguments; 12. Skimming and scanning; 13. Understanding problems and solutions; 14. Understanding effects; 15. Understanding certainty; 16. Predicting and sequencing.
WRITING:
1. Organizing ideas; 2. Email writing; 3. Writing body paragraphs; 4. Writing introductory and concluding paragraphs; 5. Describing visual information; 6. Introduction to quoting and citing sources; 7. Presenting counterarguments.
SPEAKING:
1. Varying degrees of expressing your opinion; 2. Expressing probability; 3. Persuasion; 4. Asking for clarification and reformulation; 5. Organizing ideas;
6. Presenting counterarguments.
CRITICAL THINKING:
1. Analysing Evidence: evaluating, reflecting, synthesizing; 2. Justifying your opinion; 3. Inferring: analysing and applying evidence; 4. Evaluating arguments; 5. Interpreting figurative language; 6. Brainstorming. "
